Is Destiny 2 really free? The honest receipt

Destiny 2 is free to download with a sizeable chunk of content, but most campaigns, raids and dungeons are paid. And since June 2026 Bungie isn't planning any new content updates.

TO START PLAYING£0.00

There's a lot to play for £0, but the best-known campaigns, most raids and dungeons, and Trials of Osiris need paid content, so in our editorial view it's free-to-start. Receipt lines summarise official store and support pages; the stamp and meters are our editorial view.

Pay-to-win 3/5

Does money buy power? You can't buy stats directly, but paid expansions gate activities that drop much of the strongest gear.

Grind 4/5

How slow is the free route? A loot-driven game built around repeat runs, with endgame access split by ownership.

Shop pressure 3/5

How hard does the shop push? Eververse sells cosmetics for Silver or earnable Bright Dust; expansions are the bigger spend.

Console subscription checkPossibly on PS5: Sony's UK page says PS Plus is required for online multiplayer, and Bungie notes a platform subscription may be needed for matchmade playlists. On Xbox, Microsoft makes free-to-play online multiplayer free. PC has no subscription. More on this in do free games need a subscription?

Destiny 2 after its final planned update

Before anything else, UK players should know where Destiny 2 is in its life. Bungie's support guide says that after Update 9.7.0 on 9 June 2026, Destiny 2 will no longer receive planned live-service content updates. Everything in the game as of that update stays available, and Bungie says hotfixes may still arrive for stability.

That update, Monument of Triumph, added a permanent celebration of the game's history, where Legendary Marks earned through Triumphs unlock free armour ornaments, accessories and weapon engrams. Seasonal events such as Festival of the Lost and The Dawning were retired at the same time.

For a free player, this is a mixed bag: no new seasons to chase, but also no more fear of missing time-limited content.

What the free Destiny 2 install unlocks

Bungie's help centre lists what every player can access the moment they install:

  • The New Light questline and the Arc, Solar, Void and Stasis subclasses
  • All destinations, with Patrols, Public Events and Lost Sectors
  • The full Shadowkeep and Beyond Light campaigns
  • Introductory missions from each paid campaign
  • Raids Vault of Glass, King's Fall and Crota's End, plus the Prophecy dungeon
  • Crucible PvP (except Trials of Osiris) and Gambit
  • The free track of Rewards Passes, Guardian Ranks, Clans and The Portal

That's a lot of game without paying, which is why this isn't a "demo" verdict.

The Collection, Dungeon Keys and the paid wall

Most of Destiny 2's headline story lives in expansions. Bungie currently sells them together as Destiny 2: The Collection, covering The Witch Queen, Lightfall, The Final Shape, The Edge of Fate and Renegades, and each can also be bought separately on your platform's store.

Expansions unlock their campaigns along with related Exotic missions, raids and activities. Dungeon Keys are separate; all of them are included with The Collection, or they can be bought in Eververse. Trials of Osiris needs SMS verification plus ownership of The Edge of Fate, Renegades or The Collection, and Iron Banner needs SMS verification for free accounts.

Bungie also notes that some older Light and Darkness Saga content is no longer in the game at all, so even paying won't recreate the full original story.

Bungie also sells content packs and rewards passes for specific expansions, plus non-essential add-ons such as campaign skips, so the full catalogue of purchasable items is long. Because Bungie isn't planning further content updates, though, what's on sale now is effectively the complete list.

Silver, Bright Dust and the Eververse store

The in-game store, Eververse, takes two currencies. Silver is bought with real money; on the UK Xbox Store on 3 November 2026 it was listed at £4.49 for 500, £8.49 for 1,000 (+100 bonus), £16.79 for 2,000 (+300), £24.99 for 3,000 (+500) and £39.99 for 5,000 (+1,000). Bright Dust is earned by playing, and Bungie says weekly earnable amounts went up with Update 9.7.0.

Bungie lists Silver as buying Eververse items, campaign skips, Rewards Pass ranks and archived passes. A daily offers tab rotates Silver and Bright Dust deals. PEGI notes in-game purchases on Destiny 2 content, and the UK Xbox listing doesn't flag random items.

Paying for power, Destiny 2 style

You can't buy a stat boost in Eververse. The pay-to-progress question in Destiny 2 is about access: much of the game's strongest gear comes from raids, dungeons and campaigns that sit behind expansions or Dungeon Keys. A free player has good weapons and a few raids, but not the whole loot pool.

That's why we score Destiny 2 a 3 on pay-to-win in our editorial view. Competitive Crucible matches are open to all, but someone who owns everything simply has more options to chase.

There's also a matchmaking wrinkle: Trials of Osiris, the game's top-end PvP event, requires owning The Edge of Fate, Renegades or The Collection, so the most competitive PvP is paywalled. Regular Crucible and Gambit remain free.

How grindy is Destiny 2 without expansions?

Destiny 2 is a looter shooter, so repetition is the point: you run activities again for better rolls on weapons and armour. With no new seasons coming, the grind is now self-directed. Monument of Triumph gives long-term goals in the form of Triumphs and Legendary Marks, and the free raids give a strong endgame for groups who don't mind learning mechanics.

The catch is the learning curve. Destiny 2 has years of systems layered on top of each other, so expect to read up on gear, subclasses and activity menus as you go.

Should a newcomer start Destiny 2 now?

Starting Destiny 2 in late 2026 is an unusual proposition. On the plus side, the free content is broad, Bungie isn't planning new seasonal content that would quickly date your progress, and Monument of Triumph gives long-term goals that cost nothing. The free raids also offer a taste of the game's best-known endgame.

On the minus side, the most acclaimed story arcs sit in paid expansions, some older Light and Darkness Saga content has been removed entirely, and the game's player base and matchmaking may shift now that new updates have stopped. Bungie's own wording is that hotfixes may still come for health and stability, nothing more.

Our editorial view: try the free version first and only consider The Collection if the core loop clicks. Because the paid content is fixed now, you can judge exactly what you'd be buying.

PS Plus, Xbox and PC rules for Destiny 2

  • PS5: Sony's UK Destiny 2 page states PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer, and Bungie says a platform subscription may be required for matchmade playlists. Plan on PS Plus if you want Crucible, Gambit and matchmade activities on PlayStation.
  • Xbox Series X|S: Microsoft says all Xbox players can access online multiplayer in free-to-play games at no charge. Bungie's general note that a platform subscription may be needed still applies, so check if a matchmade activity asks for one.
  • PC: no subscription.

Destiny 2 isn't available on Switch or mobile.
