Free Switch games: 7 free-to-start picks and the NSO question

Nintendo calls them "free-to-start" games, and the shelf is smaller than on PC or PlayStation. The good news is that several big free games are there, and Nintendo's own FAQ says free-to-play titles like Fortnite can be played online without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Below are the free games on our list that Nintendo lists for Switch in the UK, plus the account settings worth checking before handing over the console.

The Switch ranking

  1. Fortnite Free for real

Named by Nintendo as a free-to-play title that can be played online without Nintendo Switch Online, and listed for Switch and Switch 2.

  2. Rocket League Free for real

Listed by Nintendo as free-to-start on Switch, with matches decided by skill rather than purchases.

  3. Pokémon UNITE Free for real

A Switch-and-phone team battler, though its paid boosts and items are worth reading about before spending.

  4. Fall Guys Free for real

Listed by Nintendo as free-to-start on Switch, a light party game suited to mixed ages.

  5. Apex Legends Free-ish

Listed for Switch and Switch 2 in Nintendo's free-to-start round-up, with mostly cosmetic paid items.

  6. Overwatch Free for real

Now called Overwatch, it is listed by Nintendo as free-to-start on Switch.

  7. Warframe Free for real

Free-to-start on Switch, with a large amount of content reachable without paying.

Nintendo Switch Online and free-to-start games

On Switch, most online play sits behind Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo's UK FAQ says a membership is required for online features in many first- and third-party games on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. It also says that some games, including free-to-play titles like Fortnite, can be played online without one.

So the answer for free games is "usually not, but check". The eShop listing for each game shows whether online play needs a membership. When checked on 3 November 2026, Nintendo's UK site listed an individual 12-month membership at £17.99 and a family membership for up to eight accounts at £31.49 a year, with the Expansion Pack tier at £34.99 and £59.99 respectively.

Nintendo says free-to-play titles like Fortnite can be played online without Nintendo Switch Online. Check the eShop listing for any other game.

Nintendo's "free-to-start" label and how to find it

Nintendo uses the phrase free-to-start rather than free-to-play. It is a fair description: the download costs nothing, and optional purchases come later. Nintendo eShop has a section for these games, and Nintendo's UK news pages publish regular round-ups of free demos and free-to-start titles.

Two things to watch on the eShop:

  • Demos look free too. A demo is a sample of a paid game, not a free game. The listing will say which it is.
  • Switch and Switch 2 versions. In Nintendo's December 2025 UK round-up, Fortnite and Apex Legends were listed for both Switch 2 and Switch, while the other picks on this page were listed for Switch.

Parent and child Nintendo Accounts, and the Parental Controls app

Nintendo splits family controls across two places. The console's parental controls, which can be managed from the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on a phone, cover things like play time and age-appropriate content. Spending controls sit on the Nintendo Account itself, where a parent or guardian account manages child accounts in a family group.

Nintendo Switch Online family memberships also work through that family group, covering up to eight people. Check each game's own menus too, since voice chat and friend requests are often handled inside the game.

Restricting eShop purchases or loading a fixed balance

Nintendo's UK support pages describe two approaches for a child's account:

  • Restrict Nintendo eShop purchases on the child's Nintendo Account from the parent or guardian's account settings on the Nintendo Account website.
  • Add a set amount to the child's balance with a prepaid Nintendo eShop card or a card payment, so they can only spend what is already there.

In-game currencies on Switch, such as V-Bucks in Fortnite or Aeos gems in Pokémon Unite, are bought through the eShop, so these settings cover them. For background on why these games sell currencies at all, see how free games make money.

Handheld play, storage and Wi-Fi on Switch

The Switch's appeal is that it goes anywhere, but the free games on this page are online games. They need an internet connection to play, including in handheld mode, so they are less useful on a long car journey than a cartridge game.

Storage is the other practical issue. Free games receive frequent updates, and several of them are large downloads, so check the size listed on the eShop page and the free space on the console before downloading. Updates usually need to install before you can play online, which is worth knowing if someone wants a quick game before school.

Finally, some of these games run on several platforms. If a child already plays Fortnite or Warframe elsewhere, linking the same publisher account can bring their progress and items across, but it also means purchases made on other devices appear on the Switch too.

Why the Switch list is shorter

Many of the free games we cover simply aren't on Switch, including Valorant, Marvel Rivals, The Finals, Call of Duty: Warzone, Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Destiny 2, Roblox and Marvel Snap. eFootball is also left out: its free version is listed by Konami for PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and phones, and the Switch 2 edition is a separate release.

The order below is an editorial view based on documented features, not hands-on testing: how much is free, whether paid items affect play, and how well the game suits a handheld.
