Is VALORANT really free? The honest receipt

VALORANT is Riot's free 5v5 tactical shooter on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Guns and gunplay are identical for everyone; the money and the grind sit around agents and skins.

Every mode and every gun is free and skins are cosmetic, but new agents can take a grind or VP to unlock, so in our editorial view it's free-ish. Receipt lines summarise official store and support pages; the stamp and meters are our editorial view.

Pay-to-win 1/5

Does money buy power? Guns, damage and economy are identical for all; skins never change gameplay, per Riot.

Grind 3/5

How slow is the free route? Kingdom Credits trickle in from matches and daily checkpoints to unlock agents over time.

Shop pressure 4/5

How hard does the shop push? Premium skin bundles are pricey and a rotating personal store keeps nudging.

Console subscription checkNo. Sony's UK VALORANT page states PlayStation Plus is not required to play online, and Microsoft makes online multiplayer in free-to-play games free on Xbox. Console and PC players are in separate pools. More on this in do free games need a subscription?

VALORANT's free package on PC and console

VALORANT is a character-based 5v5 tactical shooter: one side plants the Spike, the other defends, with one life per round. According to the Xbox Store description, the free download includes Competitive and Unranked modes plus Deathmatch and Spike Rush.

It's on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Sony's UK page notes it's PS5-only on PlayStation (no PS4 version), and that PS5 and Xbox players can play together while PC players stay in their own ecosystem.

PEGI rates VALORANT 16 for strong violence, with blood effects when characters are shot. It's a competitive game first, so expect a fairly serious tone in ranked play.

Kingdom Credits and the agent unlock path

Agents are VALORANT's characters, each with their own abilities, so how you unlock them is the key free-player question. Riot's support pages explain the system:

  • You earn Kingdom Credits (KC) just for playing: 4 KC per round won, 2 KC per round played, and 150 KC for each daily checkpoint.
  • KC unlocks agents, Agent Gear and items in the rotating Accessory Store.
  • KC caps at 10,000, so it pays to spend it rather than stockpile.

New agents work differently for their first 28 days: they can only be unlocked with VALORANT Points, by completing the Agent Recruitment Event, or with an active linked Xbox Game Pass subscription. After that window, KC or Agent Unlock Tokens work too.

A patient free player never needs to pay for an agent. The cost is waiting a few weeks for the newest one, or grinding the recruitment event.

In practice that means the agent grind is about patience rather than effort. Playing regularly and hitting daily checkpoints keeps KC flowing, and spending it promptly avoids hitting the 10,000 cap. Players who only log in occasionally will unlock agents more slowly, but they're never locked out of the core game, since every mode can be played with whichever agents they already have.

VALORANT Points and the price of a skin

VALORANT Points (VP) are the premium currency and can only be bought with real money, Riot says. On the UK PlayStation Store when checked on 3 November 2026:

  • 475 VP: £3.99
  • 1,000 VP: £7.99
  • 2,050 VP: £15.99
  • 3,650 VP: £28.99
  • 5,350 VP: £39.99
  • 11,000 VP: £79.99

Sony's page says VP unlocks the seasonal battle passes, agents for permanent use, and cosmetics like gun buddies, player cards and weapon skins. Radianite Points, a second currency, upgrade certain skins cosmetically and can be bought with VP or earned through the battle pass.

The price ladder matters because skin bundles are priced in VP, and the bonus VP on bigger packs makes the larger options look like better value. Our editorial view: decide on a fixed amount first, then check what it covers, rather than working backwards from a bundle you've already fallen for.

Do VALORANT skins change how a gun shoots?

No. Riot's own wording is that the optional extras will never affect gameplay. Every weapon has the same damage, recoil and price in the round economy regardless of the skin on it, and you buy guns each round with in-match credits, not real money.

Our editorial view: on pure gunplay this is as fair as it gets. The only gameplay-relevant thing money touches is early access to new agents, and that window is time-limited and also open to free players through the recruitment event.

The battle pass and the time cost

VALORANT runs seasonal battle passes, and PEGI describes "Contracts" as content passes bought with real money that unlock skins, cards and gun buddies as you play. Pass progress comes from XP earned in matches.

Because a VALORANT match is a series of rounds rather than a single quick-fire game, progress per session is slower than in party games. If you only play a couple of matches a week, a paid pass is easy to leave unfinished.

VALORANT's store: where the pressure sits

VALORANT's skin bundles are some of the priciest cosmetics on this list, and offers rotate, which creates a classic "it might not come back" nudge (Riot's Accessory Store, for example, rotates weekly). PEGI notes that while some cosmetics come through gameplay, many are only available in the cash store or via paid Contracts.

On the positive side, there's no random-item purchase listed in VALORANT's PEGI or UK store descriptors: you see what you buy. That's one of the reasons its rating stays tied to violence rather than to the shop.

Is VALORANT a good first shooter? Our editorial take

VALORANT is free and fair on gunplay, but it isn't the gentlest introduction to shooters. Each round gives you one life, the round economy rewards planning, and competitive play is taken seriously by a lot of the player base. For someone who enjoys learning maps and coordinating with a team, that depth is the appeal; for a casual player, Deathmatch and Spike Rush are easier entry points.

The PEGI 16 rating reflects realistic, sustained violence with blood effects, so it sits above the cartoonish end of the free-shooter market. Parents of younger teens may find Marvel Rivals or Overwatch closer to the mark on tone, though both now also carry PEGI 16 for their random-item purchases.

Money doesn't make the learning curve any easier. That's a good thing for fairness, and an honest warning for anyone hoping to spend their way to a higher rank.

  • PS5: Sony's UK page answers this directly: PlayStation Plus is not required to play VALORANT online.
  • Xbox Series X|S: Microsoft says online multiplayer in free-to-play games costs nothing. Game Pass is optional, but Riot's support confirms an active linked Game Pass subscription unlocks new agents during their first 28 days.
  • PC: free via Riot's client.
