Pay-to-win 1/5
Does money buy power? Costumes don't change your bean's size, speed or grip. Physics treats everyone equally.
Grind 2/5
How slow is the free route? Short rounds keep progress ticking along; there's no gameplay locked behind levels.
Shop pressure 3/5
How hard does the shop push? Lots of costume packs and Show-Bucks bundles, but the rounds themselves stay ad-free.
Fall Guys since the switch to free in 2022
Fall Guys launched as a paid game in 2020 and became free to play on 21 June 2022 under Epic Games. The idea hasn't changed: dozens of jelly-bean characters race through obstacle courses, survival rounds and team games until one player or team is left standing.
Everything that makes up a match is free. There's no paid map pack and no premium playlist, and no round is held back for paying players. PEGI rates it 3 and describes the slapstick as characters being bounced around and pushing each other, with no harm or pain shown. For a family-friendly online game, that is about as gentle as it gets.
Show-Bucks and the costume wardrobe
The paid currency is Show-Bucks. On the UK PlayStation Store when checked on 3 November 2026:
- 800 Show-Bucks: £6.99
- 2,400 Show-Bucks: £17.49
- 4,500 Show-Bucks: £27.99
- 12,500 Show-Bucks: £69.99
The same store page listed individual costume packs from £2.09 up to £17.49. PEGI confirms the purchases cover in-game currency, cosmetics and a season pass. PEGI didn't flag paid random items for Fall Guys when we checked, and we found no official mention of loot boxes.
Show-Bucks are sold in fixed packs, starting at 800 for £6.99 on the UK PlayStation Store when checked on 3 November 2026. Costumes in the in-game store are priced in Show-Bucks, while some costume packs are sold directly on the console store in pounds, from £2.09 to £17.49 on the same date.
Having two ways to buy similar things makes price comparison harder than it needs to be. If someone is set on a specific costume, it's worth checking whether it's available as a direct console add-on first, so you know the exact pound price rather than buying a currency pack and working backwards.
And if nobody minds what their bean is wearing, the answer is simple: £0, forever.
Will a fancy costume help you qualify?
No. A bean in a top-tier costume runs, jumps, dives and grabs exactly like a bean in the default outfit. The outcome of each round comes down to timing, route choice and a fair amount of luck when a crowd of beans piles onto the same platform.
Our editorial view: Fall Guys is a clear case of cosmetic-only spending. The temptation is self-expression, not winning, and the game is honest about that.
It's worth saying because the question comes up a lot with younger players: there are no hidden stat costumes, no "lucky" outfits and no paid boosts to qualification. The game treats every bean as the same physics object. If a friend who spends keeps winning, it's practice, not purchases.
The season pass and how quickly free rewards arrive
Fall Guys runs a season pass, which PEGI lists among its purchases. Because each show is made up of short rounds, progress builds quickly even in brief sessions, and nothing in the pass changes which rounds you can play.
Where it can feel grindy is chasing a particular costume that only appears on the paid side or in a time-limited shop slot. If you're happy wearing whatever you unlock by playing, there's very little grind at all.
Where the Fall Guys shop leans on you
The pressure in Fall Guys is mostly visual. Popular collaboration costumes and seasonal packs keep appearing, and the platform stores list a long row of costume add-ons beside the free game. That can make the shop feel busier than the gameplay needs.
On the plus side, the selling doesn't interrupt the rounds, and the prices on the costumes are shown upfront in pounds on console stores. Agreeing a budget, or a "no Show-Bucks" rule, before the first session is easy with a game like this.
Another quiet source of pressure is collaboration costumes based on characters from other games and brands. They tend to appear for a limited time, which can make them feel more urgent than an ordinary costume. Our editorial view: treat any "limited" label as information, not a reason to buy. If it matters a lot to a player, waiting a day before deciding usually settles whether it was a real want or a passing one.
No subscription needed for Fall Guys on PS5, Xbox or Switch
Epic's Fall Guys support pages say you don't need PS Plus, an Xbox subscription or Nintendo Switch Online to play, only an internet connection. That lines up with the platforms' own rules:
- PS5: Sony says most free-to-play games don't require PS Plus for online play.
- Xbox: online multiplayer in free-to-play games is free for all Xbox players.
- Switch: Nintendo's FAQ confirms some free-to-play titles can be played online without a membership.
PS Plus members can claim a free costume pack, which is a bonus rather than a requirement.
Why Fall Guys is an easy yes for younger players
Among the free online games on this site, Fall Guys has one of the gentlest profiles. The PEGI 3 rating reflects slapstick rather than combat, rounds are short and the rules of each obstacle course are obvious within seconds. Losing a round is part of the fun rather than a punishment, and there's no ranked ladder to stress about.
The free version also has no content gaps to explain. A child playing for free sees the same courses and shows as a friend who has spent money, so there's no "why can't I play that mode?" conversation.
Where parents may want to step in is the shop and chat. Costume packs are bright and appealing, and the console stores list plenty of them. Pair Epic's chat and payment PINs with the platform's own spending limits and the main risks are covered.
Fall Guys chat and spending controls for families
Fall Guys uses Epic accounts, so under-13s get a cabined account with voice chat and free text chat disabled until a parent consents. Epic Parental Controls can then restrict who can chat, require a PIN to add friends and require a PIN for Epic payments.
Purchases made through PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo go through those platforms' payment systems, so set spending limits there as well. PEGI is re-rating some digital games in 2026, so check the current label if the rating matters to you.
