Is Overwatch really free? The honest receipt

Overwatch 2 is now simply called Overwatch. Every hero is unlocked for free; the money goes on skins, Battle Passes and, once again, loot boxes.

All heroes and modes are free and the shop sells cosmetics, so in our editorial view the free route is the real game, despite the loot-box return. Receipt lines summarise official store and support pages; the stamp and meters are our editorial view.

Pay-to-win 1/5

Does money buy power? Every hero is free and purchases are cosmetic; Perks are part of the match for everyone.

Grind 2/5

How slow is the free route? No hero grind any more; free Battle Pass gives coins, a Legendary Loot Box and skins.

Shop pressure 4/5

How hard does the shop push? Coins, Mythic Prisms, unvaulted passes and loot boxes create a crowded storefront.

Console subscription checkNo on PS5 and Xbox: Sony says most free-to-play games don't need PS Plus and Xbox makes free-to-play online multiplayer free. On Switch, Nintendo says some free-to-play titles skip the membership, but we found no Overwatch-specific statement, so check the eShop listing. More on this in do free games need a subscription?

Overwatch 2 is now just Overwatch

If you're searching for Overwatch 2, you're in the right place. Blizzard now calls the game simply Overwatch: its 2026 year, The Reign of Talon, restarted season numbering at Season 1 on 10 February 2026, and the UK Xbox Store, PlayStation and Nintendo listings all use the name Overwatch.

Nothing about the price changed: it's still a free-to-play team hero shooter with 5v5 and 6v6 modes, 40+ heroes and 25+ maps, according to the Xbox Store description. It's on PC, PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and, since 14 April 2026, Nintendo Switch 2.

Every hero unlocked, no catch

Overwatch used to put new heroes behind Battle Pass progress. Blizzard changed that back in Season 10 (under the old numbering): all new heroes are unlocked immediately when they launch, and all existing heroes are unlocked for every player.

That removes the single biggest free-player complaint the game used to have. A brand-new account has the same tactical options as a long-time spender. Season 15 (old numbering) then added Perks, minor and major upgrades you choose during Quick Play and Competitive matches, and these are part of the match for everyone rather than something you buy.

This also simplifies things for parents and new players. There's no hero currency to explain, no "you need to buy this character" moment and no rotation of free heroes. If a friend says a new hero is great, a free player can switch to them in the next match.

Overwatch Coins, Mythic Prisms and the Battle Pass

The main currency is Overwatch Coins. On the UK Xbox Store on 3 November 2026, 500 coins cost £4.39 and 1,000 cost £8.39, with bigger bonus packs above that. There's also Mythic Prisms, sold separately, tied to top-tier Mythic skins.

Each season has a Battle Pass with a free and a premium track. Blizzard says free players can earn 600 coins per season on the free track; Season 15's announcement adds a Legendary Loot Box, 1,500 credits and a couple of skins for free. Premium adds more cosmetics, two Legendary Loot Boxes and access to the Mythic Shop, where you work towards Mythic skins.

The current season also brings back older passes as Unvaulted Passes, according to the Xbox Store description.

Three currencies (coins, Mythic Prisms and the in-game credits the free track awards) is a lot to keep straight. Our editorial view is that the free track is generous enough to keep a casual player's collection growing, while Mythic skins are clearly aimed at players who want to spend.

Loot boxes are back, and so is a higher rating

Loot boxes returned in Season 15 (old numbering). You can earn them through play and the Battle Pass, and Blizzard notes they aren't available from the Battle Pass in Belgium. PEGI's database says they can also be purchased with real money, and that players don't know exactly what they'll get before buying.

That's why PEGI updated Overwatch to PEGI 16 under its June 2026 criteria; the game had been PEGI 12 for its violence. The UK Xbox and PlayStation listings show PEGI 16 with In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items), while the Nintendo UK listing still showed PEGI 12 when we checked, as re-ratings reach storefronts at different speeds.

PEGI is clear the game can still be played without buying random items. The higher rating is about the shop, not the action.

Is there any pay-to-win left in Overwatch?

Not in our editorial view. Heroes are free, Perks are earned in-match by everyone, and the items for sale are skins, emotes, sprays and similar cosmetics. Blizzard's own shop explainers describe the items for sale as cosmetics such as skins, name cards and charms.

The remaining edge is purely social: Mythic skins are flashy and seasonal, and some players feel left out without them. That's worth naming for younger players, but it doesn't touch the scoreboard.

Overwatch for younger players after the rating change

Overwatch's action hasn't become any more violent: PEGI still describes it as non-realistic violence where characters show little reaction, damage shows on health bars and defeated heroes respawn. The jump from PEGI 12 to 16 is entirely about loot boxes that can be bought with real money.

That gives parents a clear lever. If a younger player is allowed to play, a zero spending limit on the console or PC account removes the paid random items that drove the rating, while still leaving every hero and mode available. Earned loot boxes from the Battle Pass and play still exist, but they don't cost anything.

Because store re-ratings roll out at different speeds, you may still see PEGI 12 on some listings. The PEGI database shows PEGI 16 when we checked on 3 November 2026.

How far 600 free coins a season actually goes

Blizzard's free Battle Pass track pays out 600 Overwatch Coins per season. On the UK Xbox Store, 500 coins cost £4.39 and 1,000 cost £8.39 when checked, so the free coins are worth a little over £5 at those prices each season.

Coins can be saved across seasons or spent on individual shop items. It's a modest but genuine trickle, and it means a patient free player can occasionally pick something from the shop without spending real money.

Mythic Prisms work differently: they're sold separately and tied to top-tier Mythic skins, which are positioned as premium items rather than something the free track is designed to cover.

Console subscriptions and Overwatch

  • PS5: Sony's PS Plus FAQ says most free-to-play games don't require a membership for online play, and Sony's Overwatch page doesn't list PS Plus as a requirement.
  • Xbox: Microsoft makes online multiplayer in free-to-play games free.
  • Switch and Switch 2: Nintendo's FAQ says some free-to-play games can be played online without Nintendo Switch Online, naming Fortnite. We found no official statement naming Overwatch specifically, so check the eShop listing before relying on it.
