Pay-to-win 2/5
Does money buy power? Paid gems can no longer be bought, so new spending advantages are off the table.
Grind 2/5
How slow is the free route? Short matches; the farewell event hands out items for free.
Shop pressure 1/5
How hard does the shop push? Real-money sales of gems and the club have ended.
Free to start, and now with a closing date
Pokémon UNITE is a 5-on-5 team battle game in which two teams of Pokémon compete to score the most points. It arrived on Nintendo Switch in July 2021 and on phones later that year, with cross-platform play between Switch and mobile. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company describe it as free to start, with optional in-game purchases.
On 26 October 2026, the official site announced that the service will end on Tuesday 23 March 2027 at 00:00 UTC on both Switch and mobile. Until then, the game remains playable and free to download in the UK.
What the end of service changes for your wallet
The announcement changed the shop overnight. According to the official notice:
- Aeos gem sales stopped on 27 October 2026 at 05:00 UTC.
- New UNITE Club purchases and automatic renewals stopped at the same time; existing members keep benefits for their current period.
- Gems you already own can still be used until the service ends.
The notice does not mention refunds for unused gems. If you have a balance, the realistic option is to spend it in-game before 23 March 2027.
The farewell event and the post-shutdown Library
A special farewell event starts on Thursday 12 November 2026 and runs until the service ends. The official site says it offers items including Unite licences (which let you use Pokémon in battle) and Holowear outfits.
The game is also adding a Library feature. Players who complete the required download before 23 March 2027 will be able to view their records and content after the shutdown, even though logging in to battle will no longer be possible. If someone in your home has played for years, it is worth making sure that download happens.
Switch and mobile: one account, two screens
Pokémon UNITE supports cross-platform battles between Nintendo Switch and mobile, and players can link a Nintendo Account or Pokémon Trainer Club account to keep progress across both. If you start on a phone, you can carry on on Switch, and the other way round.
On Switch, Nintendo's UK listing asks for a persistent internet connection and an up-to-date system, and the download is around 6.7 GB. It does not list a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and Nintendo's UK FAQ confirms that some free-to-play titles can be played online without one.
On mobile, the official site notes that data charges may apply, so Wi-Fi is the cheaper choice for long sessions.
Was it pay-to-win before the shop closed?
When gems were on sale, spending could speed up access to licences and other items, which gave paying players more choice in a competitive game. That is now history for new purchases, though players who stocked up earlier may still hold more gems than others for a few months.
With real-money sales ended and a free farewell event on the way, we score pay-to-win at 2 out of 5 and shop pressure at the lowest possible level. The more relevant question now is whether a game with a few months left is worth starting.
Is it worth starting a game that is closing?
It depends what you want from it. Pokémon UNITE's matches are short and easy to learn, and the farewell event hands out items, so a newcomer can sample a lot quickly. There is no long-term progression to protect, which removes some of the usual pressure.
On the other hand, anything you unlock will stop being playable on 23 March 2027, and the official competitive scene is winding down: the Pokémon UNITE Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo tournament goes ahead with qualifiers from 5 December 2026. Why it carries a PEGI 16 on Nintendo's UK store
Nintendo's UK listing shows Pokémon UNITE at PEGI 16, with descriptors for in-game purchases including random items and users interacting. We did not find it in the pegi.info search database. The rating may surprise parents used to Pokémon games aimed at younger players.
It reflects PEGI's 2026 approach: since June 2026 PEGI weighs paid random items heavily, and from October 2026 it has been moving existing digital-only games with paid random items from 3, 7 or 12 up to 16 across storefronts. The content itself is cartoon Pokémon battles; the number is about the purchase design.
Getting the most from the final months
If you already play, the end-of-service timeline gives you a clear plan. Based on the official notice, the editorial priorities are:
- Spend any gems you hold. They can be used until 23 March 2027, and the notice does not mention refunds.
- Join the farewell event. It starts on 12 November 2026 and hands out items including Unite licences and Holowear.
- Complete the Library download. Players who download it before 23 March 2027 can keep viewing their records afterwards.
- Leave the UNITE Club alone. New sign-ups and renewals have stopped; existing members keep benefits for their current period.
For families, this is also a natural moment to talk about what happens to digital purchases when an online game closes. Items bought for Pokémon UNITE will stop being usable in battle after March 2027, which is a useful real-world example of why in-game spending is best kept modest.
