Pay-to-win 3/5
Does money buy power? Depends on the game: some sell boosts or power, others only cosmetics.
Grind 2/5
How slow is the free route? Most experiences are quick to jump into; some use daily rewards and long unlocks.
Shop pressure 4/5
How hard does the shop push? Avatar shop plus each game's own store means offers are everywhere.
One free app, thousands of creator-made games
Roblox is less a single game than a platform. Players make games (Roblox calls them experiences) with Roblox Studio, and everyone else can jump into them from one free app on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox, iPhone and Android. You can play racing games, role-play towns, obstacle courses, horror games and shooters without buying anything up front.
That variety is the appeal and the complication. Because each experience is built by a different creator, each one decides what it sells, how hard it pushes, and whether paying gives an advantage. Any answer to "is Roblox free?" depends on which games your household actually plays.
Roblox also lets players make their own experiences in Roblox Studio for free, which is one of its most distinctive features. For creative children, building a simple obstacle course or game can be as engaging as playing other people's work, and it costs nothing.
Robux, Premium and where the money goes
Robux is Roblox's virtual currency. It buys avatar items, game passes and items inside individual experiences. On the UK App Store, Roblox Premium is listed at £4.99, £9.99 and £19.99 per month for its 450, 1000 and 2200 tiers (checked on 3 Nov 2026).
Premium is optional. A monthly plan can quietly become a regular household bill, so if you sign up, set a reminder to review it. The app listing itself warns that games may include optional purchases, including random virtual items.
- Free: joining, playing most experiences, making games in Studio.
- Paid (optional): Robux, Premium, game passes, avatar items.
Paid random items and Roblox's odds rule
Some experiences sell paid random items, such as paying Robux to spin a wheel or hatch an egg with an unknown reward. Roblox's creator rules require developers to show every possible outcome and the numerical odds before a player buys. Where Roblox flags an account as restricted, creators must remove or replace these items.
PEGI's consumer advice also notes in-game currency purchases and that some items may be randomised. If you would rather your child avoided random paid rewards entirely, the most reliable tool is a spending limit through Roblox's parental controls or the device store.
When paying helps, and when it is only for looks
Because creators set the rules, pay-to-win varies widely. Some experiences sell purely cosmetic items or a faster way to unlock content. Others sell boosts, stronger tools or extra abilities that do help against other players. We score Roblox 3 out of 5 to reflect that mix, not any single game.
A practical tip: before your child commits to a game, look at its store page. If most items are boosts and power-ups, expect more pressure; if they are mainly outfits, the free experience is usually complete.
Look out for experiences that sell the same boost repeatedly, or that time-limit their items. Those designs encourage repeat spending more than a single, permanent purchase does. Experiences that sell a one-off pass for a clear benefit are easier to budget for.
Talking to children about Robux before the first request
Roblox is often a child's first experience of in-game spending, which makes it a good place to set expectations early. Some editorial suggestions for families:
- Agree what Robux are for. Avatar items, a favourite game's pass, or nothing at all. Having a rule before the request makes the conversation easier.
- Use the monthly spending limit. Roblox's parental controls let you cap monthly spending and receive notifications.
- Watch for random rewards. If a game sells spins, eggs or crates, look at the odds it is required to show together, so the chances are clear before anything is bought.
- Review subscriptions. If you choose Premium, check it periodically so it does not run on unused.
Roblox is genuinely playable for free; most of the pressure comes from friends showing off items. A clear household rule takes much of the heat out of that.
Parental Guidance, not a number: Roblox's ratings
PEGI rates Roblox Parental Guidance Recommended rather than giving an age, because the user-made content is broad and unpredictable. Roblox-made games include frequent mild violence between blocky characters and some jump scares. The UK App Store rates it 13+ and lists loot boxes, advertising and chat; the UK PS Store shows Parental Guidance Recommended with in-game purchases that include random items.
Roblox applies its own content maturity labels to each game (Minimal, Mild, Moderate and stricter age-checked tiers).
Chat age checks and spending controls for families
Since January 2026, Roblox requires an age check (facial age estimation, or ID for 13+) before anyone can use chat, and places users in age bands so they mainly chat with similar ages. For under-9s, chat in games is off by default unless a parent consents.
Roblox's parental controls let a linked parent account set a monthly spending limit, turn on spending notifications, choose allowed content maturity levels, block specific games, limit who the child can chat with, and set daily screen-time limits. Roblox notes that its spending limits stop applying from age 13, so device-level purchase approval is a useful backstop for teenagers.
Playing Roblox on PlayStation and Xbox
Roblox's UK PS Store listing shows it as free on PS4 and PS5 with online play required, and it does not list PS Plus as a requirement. On Xbox, Microsoft named Roblox among the free-to-play games that no longer need a paid subscription for online multiplayer from April 2021. Cross-platform play means friends on phones, PCs and consoles can join the same experiences.
