Our editorial view: you can build competitive decks without paying, but a busy shop and faster collection for spenders make it free-ish rather than free. Receipt lines summarise official store and support pages; the stamp and meters are our editorial view.

Pay-to-win 3/5

Does money buy power? Player-versus-player; spending speeds up collecting new cards, which widens deck options.

Grind 3/5

How slow is the free route? Matches are short, but completing a collection free takes a long time.

Shop pressure 4/5

How hard does the shop push? Gold, several pass tiers and bundles are promoted throughout the game.

Console subscription checkMARVEL SNAP is on iOS, Android and Steam only, so no PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo subscription is involved. An internet connection is needed for matches. More on this in do free games need a subscription?

Free card battles across phone and PC

MARVEL SNAP is a digital card game from Second Dinner in which you build decks of Marvel heroes and villains and play short online matches against other players. It is free on the UK App Store, Google Play and Steam, and the official site showed regular balance updates and a new season in late October 2026.

There is no console version, so this page is about phones, tablets and PC. Parents should note the UK App Store rates it 13+ and lists loot boxes and chat.

How new cards land in your collection

Second Dinner's official guides describe several routes to new cards, all reachable without paying:

  • Collection Level: as your Collection Level rises, Collector's Caches and Reserves hand out rewards, including cards and Collector's Tokens.
  • Spotlight Caches: after Collection Level 500, one cache appears every 120 levels, featuring three weekly cards or a random Series 4 or 5 card.
  • Token Shop: Collector's Tokens buy specific cards; the shop rotates every 8 hours and you can pin a card you are saving for.

Second Dinner has also said that cards move down from the rarest series to a more common one over time, so newer players are not permanently locked out. The free route works, but it is slower than buying.

Spotlight Cache odds and Snap Packs, explained

Second Dinner publishes how its random rewards work. For Spotlight Caches, it describes a sequential system: a 25% chance of one featured option, then 33% of the remaining ones, then 50%, then 100% for the last. If you already own a featured card, you get a time-exclusive variant instead.

Snap Packs are bought with Tokens, and Tokens can be bought with Gold through Token Packs, so money can reach them indirectly. Each pack guarantees one card you do not own and adds two bonus rewards rolled separately, so you can get the same bonus twice. Drop tables are published for each pack type.

MARVEL SNAP was not in the pegi.info database when we checked on 3 Nov 2026; the UK App Store lists 13+ and "Loot Boxes".

Gold, Season Passes and the UK price list

Gold is the premium currency. The UK App Store (checked 3 Nov 2026) lists 300 Gold at £4.99, 700 at £9.99 and 1,450 at £19.99. It also lists a Gold Pass at £4.99, a Season Pass at £9.99, Season Pass Plus at £14.99, Season Pass Super at £19.99 and a Welcome Bundle at £2.99. Steam lists a separate entry pack.

The number of pass tiers is the main pressure point. Four different pass products at four price points make it easy to drift from a small purchase to a regular one, so agree a limit before the first top-up.

Spending sensibly if you want to support the game

Plenty of players are happy to spend a little on a game they enjoy. If that is you, MARVEL SNAP's shop rewards a plan. Editorial suggestions:

  • Prefer one pass over Gold packs. A season pass is a known cost; topping up Gold for Token Packs and Snap Packs is open-ended.
  • Check the drop tables. Second Dinner publishes odds for Snap Pack bonus rewards and explains Spotlight Cache odds, so you can see what you are paying for.
  • Remember the Token Shop. Saving Tokens and pinning a card is a predictable way to get a specific card.
  • Use device spending controls. iOS, Android and Steam all offer ways to limit or approve purchases.

The more random the purchase, the less sure you are of what you get. In our editorial view, the passes are the most predictable way to spend, and spending nothing is still a valid way to play.

Can a bigger wallet beat a better deck?

MARVEL SNAP is player-versus-player, so collection size matters. Spending lets you unlock cards faster and try more deck ideas sooner. A free player who already owns the cards a deck needs is playing on the same terms.

We score it 3 out of 5: skill and knowing when to retreat matter a lot, but a wider collection is a real edge.

Short matches, long collection

Each match is quick, which makes MARVEL SNAP easy to fit into a commute. The longer grind is in collecting: moving through Collection Level, waiting for Spotlight Caches every 120 levels and saving Tokens for specific cards. For casual players happy with a few decks, it is comfortable. For completionists, it is a long project without spending.

Phone, tablet or Steam: picking a screen

MARVEL SNAP is on iPhone and iPad, Android and Steam, and it has been on Steam since August 2023. Short matches suit phones, while PC gives a bigger view of the board.

It is not available on PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch, so console subscriptions never come into it. All you need is an internet connection, as every match is online.

For parents, the 13+ App Store rating and its listing of loot boxes and chat are the key details. Device-level purchase approval is the simplest guardrail.
