Is Honkai: Star Rail Free? Warps, Passes and What Spending Buys

Honkai: Star Rail is a story-heavy space adventure you can play from start to finish without paying. Like its sister game Genshin Impact, its characters arrive through Warps: random draws you can fund with real money.

Our editorial view: the story and turn-based battles are free, but chasing particular characters means paid random draws and a busy shop. Receipt lines summarise official store and support pages; the stamp and meters are our editorial view.

Pay-to-win 3/5

Does money buy power? Single-player, so nobody is beaten by your wallet; spending still eases the hardest modes.

Grind 3/5

How slow is the free route? Story is generous; building teams for endgame modes takes repeated runs.

Shop pressure 4/5

How hard does the shop push? Limited Warps, a daily pass and a battle pass are promoted constantly.

Console subscription checkHonkai: Star Rail is on PS5 but not Xbox or Switch. Sony says most games need PS Plus for online multiplayer but some do not; the UK PS Store listing for Star Rail is free, says online play is required and does not list PS Plus as a requirement. A full space opera at a price of zero

Honkai: Star Rail is a turn-based role-playing game from HoYoverse (published as COGNOSPHERE). You ride the Astral Express between worlds, fight in turn-based battles, solve puzzles and collect a party of characters. It is free to download on PC, PS5, iPhone and Android.

The main story, side quests and regular events are all free, and there is no player-versus-player mode. That last point matters: in Star Rail, any advantage you buy only affects your own game. It does not make another player lose.

The writing and presentation are the reason most people stay. Each world has its own storyline, and new chapters arrive with version updates at no charge. You can play at your own pace without worrying about falling behind other players, because there is nobody to fall behind.

Warps explained without the jargon

A Warp is Star Rail's version of a random draw. You spend a ticket-style item and get a random character or Light Cone (equipment for characters) of varying rarity. Limited event Warps feature particular characters for a few weeks, which creates the familiar "pull now or miss out" feeling.

HoYoverse uses a guarantee system on Warps: if you keep drawing, a top-rarity result is guaranteed after a fixed number of attempts, and the exact rates and counts are shown on each Warp's details page in the game. We have not reproduced the percentages here because we could only confirm them inside the game, not on a public official page we could open on 3 Nov 2026.

A guarantee caps the worst case. It does not make any single draw less random, and there is no fixed price for a specific character.

Oneiric Shards, Express Supply Pass and The Nameless Glory

Oneiric Shards are the paid currency. On the UK App Store they run from £0.99 for 60 to £99.99 for 6,480. The same store lists the Express Supply Pass at £4.99 and The Nameless Glory, the paid battle-pass track, at £9.99. The UK PS Store lists Oneiric Shard packs from £0.99 to £79.99 (all prices checked on 3 Nov 2026).

The pass items are the ones most players consider, because they spread rewards over time. That is also why they keep you logging in. If you buy one, treat it as a subscription you have chosen, and cancel the habit if the game stops being fun.

Keeping Warp spending under control

Because Star Rail is single-player, the pull to spend comes from wanting a particular character rather than from losing to other people. That makes it easier to set rules in advance. Our editorial suggestions:

  • Pick characters you will actually use. Limited Warps rotate, and a character you skip is likely to be one of many that appear over time.
  • Choose one pass, or none. If you want to spend, a single pass is a predictable cost compared with buying Shards for random draws.
  • Turn on purchase approval. PS5, iOS and Android all support spending limits or approval for purchases.
  • Check the Warp details screen. The game shows rates and guarantee rules there; read them before spending anything.

Set limits first and the game stays a story you are enjoying rather than a shop you are visiting.

Spending and the endgame difficulty curve

The story can be completed with free and story-given characters. Where spending makes a difference is in the harder repeatable challenge modes, where a wider roster and duplicate copies of characters make clears easier and faster.

Because there is no PvP, we score pay-to-win at 3 out of 5: spending tilts your own experience, and the shop is designed around that tilt, but no paying player is standing on your neck. If you are happy to take the story at your own pace, the free route is comfortable.

A useful way to think about it: the story is balanced for the characters the game hands you, while the challenge modes reward a deep roster. If you enjoy the story most, spending adds little. If you love optimising teams for the hardest fights, the shop will talk to you far more often.

Why the PEGI number for Star Rail may change

On 3 Nov 2026, PEGI's database lists Honkai: Star Rail at PEGI 12 for PC and PS5, with descriptors for Violence, Bad language and Paid random items. The UK PS Store shows PEGI 12 with "In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)". The UK App Store rates it 13+ and lists loot boxes and chat.

PEGI changed its criteria in June 2026 to weigh paid random items, purchases, chat and play-encouraging features. From October 2026 it began updating a selection of existing digital-only games rated 3, 7 or 12 with paid random items to PEGI 16, across storefronts, and says the updates take time. So Star Rail's number could rise; check the store listing on the day you download.

Daily chores and how long building a team takes

After the story, progress comes from repeating activities that hand out upgrade materials, with a daily limit on how much you can earn. That keeps everyone on a similar pace and means spending cannot simply skip it, but it also nudges you into a daily routine.

Turn-based battles are less demanding on your reflexes than an action game, so repeat runs feel more like a routine than a test. Our score of 3 out of 5 reflects a steady, predictable routine rather than a wall.

Where you can play it, and where you cannot

Star Rail is on PC, PS5, iOS and Android. PEGI's database lists only PC and PS5 console-style versions, and we found no Xbox or Nintendo Switch store listing as of 3 Nov 2026. It is a single-player game with an online connection required, so console subscriptions are mostly irrelevant; the UK PS Store listing shows it as free with online play required and does not list PS Plus as a requirement.

Phone players should check storage space before downloading, as it is a large install.
