Pay-to-win 1/5
Does money buy power? Spending mostly buys time and slots; weapons and Warframes are earned through missions and crafting.
Grind 4/5
How slow is the free route? Long resource farms, crafting waits and a huge item list make the free route slow.
Shop pressure 2/5
How hard does the shop push? The Market is easy to ignore in missions; PEGI lists no paid random items.
How far Warframe's free path really goes
Warframe is a third-person co-op shooter where you play as a Tenno, piloting armoured suits called Warframes through fast missions across the solar system. It costs nothing to download on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store included), PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iPhone and Android, and Digital Extremes pitches it plainly: start playing today for free.
The important bit for anyone asking whether it is really free is this: the story quests, the open zones, the missions and the vast majority of weapons and Warframes are not locked behind a payment. You collect blueprints and resources by playing, then build items in your Foundry. Money mainly changes how quickly you get there and how much storage you have.
- Free: quests, missions, crafting, most gear, co-op and trading.
- Paid (optional): Platinum, bundles, Prime Access-style packs and Regal Aya.
- Also earnable: Platinum itself, by trading items to other players.
Platinum: the currency you can buy or trade for
Platinum is Warframe's premium currency. On the UK App Store it runs from £3.99 for 75 Platinum up to £129.99 for 4,600 Platinum (prices as checked on 3 Nov 2026; other stores may differ). It pays for things like extra weapon and Warframe slots, ready-built gear, cosmetics, boosters and skipping crafting timers.
What makes Warframe unusual is that Platinum moves between players. Digital Extremes' cross-progression page confirms player trading, including across platforms, with one exception: trading Platinum between Nintendo Switch and other platforms is not available. In practice, a free player can farm parts or mods that other people want and sell them for Platinum, then spend that Platinum on slots or cosmetics.
That loop is the main reason we rate Warframe as free for real rather than free-ish: the paid currency is reachable without a card, it just costs you effort.
Does spending give you more firepower?
Mostly, no, in our editorial view. Warframe is a co-op game, so there is no ranked ladder where a paying player beats a free one. Buying a Warframe or weapon outright gets you the same item a free player crafts later; it does not come with better stats.
Where money genuinely helps is convenience:
- Slots: you will run out of space for new gear, and slots cost Platinum.
- Timers: building items in the Foundry takes real-world time unless you pay to rush.
- Boosters: temporary bonuses that speed up resource or experience gains.
None of these make you stronger in a given mission. They make the overall journey shorter. For a free player, the honest summary is that patience substitutes for money almost everywhere, and trading fills most remaining gaps.
It is also worth knowing what money cannot do. It cannot buy mastery of movement and combat, and it cannot replace learning how missions and builds work. Those limits are a large part of why Warframe has kept a reputation as one of the fairer free-to-play shooters.
Crafting waits, resource runs and the long middle stretch
This is where Warframe asks the most of free players. The early hours move quickly, but the middle game is built around repeating missions for specific resources and blueprint parts, then waiting for items to finish building. A single new Warframe can need several separate components, each with its own build time.
That loop is the real price of the game. It suits players who enjoy routine sessions and gradually filling out a collection. It is frustrating for anyone who wants to try every new release on day one.
- Expect to repeat favourite missions many times for parts.
- Plan slot use carefully so you are not forced to buy space early.
- Trading for parts you dislike farming is a legitimate free shortcut.
Our grind score of 4 out of 5 reflects how much there is to collect, not that any of it is blocked without paying.
A sensible first month in Warframe without a card
If you are starting Warframe on a zero budget, the order you do things in matters more than any purchase. These are editorial suggestions based on how the game's systems are documented, not a guaranteed route:
- Follow the quests. The early quests introduce the game's systems and open up new places to play and farm.
- Spend Platinum on space, not speed. If you get hold of any, slots are usually better value than a cosmetic or a rushed build.
- Learn what other players want. Before you sell anything, check what items are in demand so you trade for fair amounts of Platinum.
- Build one thing at a time. Crafting timers run in real time, so queue builds before logging off rather than paying to rush.
The point is not to avoid spending forever. It is to make sure any money you do spend buys something you could not reasonably earn, rather than time you would have happily played anyway.
Regal Aya, Prime packs and how hard the shop pushes
Warframe's in-game Market and its storefront bundles are always there, but the game rarely interrupts a mission to sell you something. The more noticeable push comes around premium bundles: the UK App Store lists a Starter Weapon Pack for £4.99 and Regal Aya (used to unlock returning Prime items) at £13.99 for three, £26.99 for seven and £52.99 for fifteen.
Prime items are upgraded versions of existing gear. They are desirable, but they are not required to clear content, and they can also be obtained by playing and trading. If someone in your household is tempted by a bundle, it is worth checking what the free route offers first.
PEGI 18: what parents should know before downloading
Warframe is rated PEGI 18 on PC, PlayStation and Xbox for violence. PEGI's consumer advice describes frequent strong violence, including bloody depictions of bodies cut apart with bladed weapons. The UK App Store version is rated 18+ and lists messaging and chat.
So while the price tag is friendly, the content is aimed at adults. Parents of younger players should look elsewhere on our list. For adults, the usual platform-level controls (spending limits and purchase approval on consoles, iOS and Android) are a sensible extra layer given how much the shop sells.
One account across PC, consoles and phones
Warframe supports cross-platform play across PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and mobile, plus Cross Platform Save, which lets one account carry progress such as quests and ranks between platforms. That makes it easy to start on whatever device you already own without paying again.
Two practical notes: crossplay and trading across platforms depend on your in-game settings, and Platinum trading between Switch and other platforms is not available. If you mainly play on Switch and want to trade for Platinum, factor that in.
Questions about Warframe
Is Warframe free to play?
Yes. It is free to download and play on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. Optional purchases are available.
Is Warframe pay-to-win?
In our editorial view, no. It is a co-op game, and paid items are the same gear free players can craft. Money mainly saves time and buys slots.
Can you get Platinum in Warframe without paying?
Yes, by trading items to other players. Trading Platinum between Nintendo Switch and other platforms is not available, according to Digital Extremes.
Do I need PS Plus, Game Pass or Switch Online for Warframe?
Not on Switch (per Digital Extremes) or Xbox (free-to-play multiplayer has been free since April 2021). The UK PlayStation listing does not list PS Plus as a requirement.
What age rating is Warframe?
PEGI 18 for violence on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and 18+ on the UK App Store.
